Lago de Atitlán Slideshow
June 7th, 2013 | Posted by in Guatemala | Slideshow Pictures | The Places We've BeenIn many ways, the experience of Atitlán is beyond words. Never have I been so moved (or so stilled) by a lake, and I certainly can’t even begin to think of a time when for 31 days in a row I awoke to a more breathtaking site than the volcanoes, clouds, and pristine mirror of water that we were gifted with this May (slideshow below). The first half of the month was quiet and calm, and aside from our jobs, we didn’t do much beyond relaxing and taking it slow. Then, with friends visiting the third week of the month, we spent less time on work and more time exploring. Throughout May I tried unsuccessfully to wrap my head around Atitlán’s place on the increasingly vague spectrum between “off the beaten path” and “easily accessible”. No one at the lake can view it as “off the beaten path” anymore, including ourselves who only learned about the locale a year ago but felt extremely connected during our time there as well as our guests who might have said otherwise prior to their visit but upon arrival decided they’d reached their destination with ease. That said, it certainly felt like we were in a very special place, a place still relatively unsaturated in tourist terms (our visitors also pointed out that it was not a place they would have gone without us there to lure them) and comfortably educational in Vangabonds terms. In Guatemala, Atitlán is viewed as a well known vacation spot, but for many Americans, it is entirely unknown. You should probably try to get there before that changes.

some cracking shots. hard not to get a bad photo around the lake.
Probably harder to stop taking pictures.
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your adventures! I am catching up on the last few weeks and enjoying it thoroughly
Thank you, Cristin! Atitlán was AMAZING. Like you said when we first arrived, Guatemala itself is just a lovely country. Hope you guys are well! Loved your family hug picture at the end of May.
