Havens Dairy Farm

February 14th, 2012 | Posted by Brianna in The Places We've Been

In a whirlwind 2.5 days this past weekend, we drove 9 hours to New Jersey and back for a hands-on tour of the Havens Dairy Farm.  Whether a journey in true vagabond form or a spontaneous short-term excursion, we are always excited to share an awesome travel experience, and figured this would be a great chance to test out a few photo plugins and sharing formats while we’re at it.

Highlights?  Tons of them.  My guess is that nearly all city dwellers in this country would gain just as much perspective and knowledge by spending a weekend working on an American farm as they would by visiting another country.  The connect-the-dots drive from city to city all the way up the East Coast is always an experience much different than the mundane trips through the Midwest we grew up knowing.  Even better, my sister (who lives and works at Havens Dairy Farm with her fiance, Nikki) is seriously one of the coolest people I know, and any time with her is a highlight in itself.  I loved discovering newborn chicks, genuinely connecting with a goat, herding animals 12 times my weight, plopping down in the mud by the river, and battling my way through a laugh-til-your-stomach-hurts Kinect Dance duel.  Learning that bottle feeding a cow is less like a fairy tale and more like a wrestling match tops the list too.  For more pictures, an extended album can be viewed here.

Lowlights?  Only the stench that slapped us in the face when we opened the trunk upon our arrival back in North Carolina.  I wonder if we’ll ever again not smell like cow shit…
