Colonia del Sacramento Wrap Up and Slideshow

April 16th, 2014 | Posted by Ian in Slideshow Pictures | The Places We've Been | Uruguay

More than anything, Colonia del Sacramento is an escape. It is old cars and cobblestone streets and lamplight, all of it seemingly separated by both kilometers and centuries from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires, visible on a clear day across the Rio de la Plata. Even the river itself looks different from this side of things — in BA its brown churn is a symbol of power and commerce; in Colonia the grey waves lap the shore as sailboats drift in. There isn’t much to do in Colonia, and that is precisely the beauty of the place. Besides the occasional flurry of candombe, the biggest event is the nightly light show as the setting sun dips below the water. If you are looking to party, this is not the place. If you want to stroll through history, sip your coffee with a book (or just your thoughts), and forget about to-do lists, Colonia del Sacramento will be glad to accommodate you.
