This is an installment in an ongoing post series detailing a typical day in one of our destinations. Not everything in this schedule might happen on any given day, but it should give you a good idea of our usual activities.

6:30 AM – The sun begins to peak over the mountaintops a few miles to the east of us and through the purple blooms of the jacaranda tree outside our window.

7:00 AM – The shouts of children in the schoolyard a few doors down begin. If I am not already out of bed, my slumber is completely destroyed by the Gas de Oaxaca truck driving around playing an audio clip that reminds of a SpongeBob SquarePants arcade game that used to torment me while I worked at a temp job in a Tahitian themed party room because there weren’t any legit desks to be found.

7:15 AM – Breakfast. Maybe a banana-mango smoothie. Definitely some fresh-brewed Oaxacan-grown coffee.

7:30 AM – Work time.

12:00PM – Lunchie lunch. This month we alternated between sopa azteca (a delicious tomato-based soup with tortilla strips and avocados), sopa de papas (potato soup), and rice with beans and peppers. On Wednesdays, we head to the weekly market a couple miles up the highway in Villa de Etla to stock up on cheap produce.

1:00 PM – Work time.

5:00 PM – Workout time. A baseball field (it might accurately be called a very small stadium) in the middle of town is the de facto place to sweat in San Sebastian. At any given time there might be people running or walking the footpath around the edge, playing a game of pickup soccer, having baseball practice, getting their dogs some exercise, lounging in the grandstand, or (on one occasion) getting motorcycle lessons in the outfield.

6:00 PM – Dinner, perhaps under the jacaranda tree in our courtyard. See our lunch choices above for an idea of what this might be. Although, if we are being honest, we may have indulged in some very excellent pizza or some very excellent Chinese takeout once or twice during the month.

7:00 PM – Choose one: Pickup soccer on the court in the middle of the village, sunset on the rooftop, drive into Oaxaca City for a baseball game, watch Kansas basketball via Skype, etc.

9:00 PM – CRASH COURSE! Our favorite YouTube channel (actually, it’s the only YouTube channel we tune into regularly), Crash Course produces twelve(ish) minute videos each week that are both chalk full of information and immensely entertaining. The World History and relatively new US History tracks are amazing and we watch them over and over and over.
