A Day in the Life: San Cristobal De Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico

April 29th, 2013 | Posted by Ian in A Day in the Life | Mexico | The Places We've Been

This is an installment in an ongoing post series detailing a typical day in one of our destinations. Not everything in this schedule might happen on any given day, but it should give you a good idea of our usual activities.

6:15 AMSan Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, MexicoThe very first hints of daylight creep up over the mountains surrounding town. The sounds of one thousand chickens and a lone turkey greeting the day can be faintly heard.

6:45 AM – Breakfast and coffee. We found a little shop in the Centro selling freshly roasted and ground local coffee, so it’s been a pretty good month on that front.

7:00 AM – Personal development, including (but not limited to), reading, studying Spanish, Coursera, and CodeAcademy.

8:00 AM – Work time. Olmec wanders the garden looking for birds (he actually tallied no fewer than five blackbirds this month; we’re not entirely sure where this crazed beast came from).

10:00 AM – Yoga practice and meditation outside. (Note: This one is Brianna only.)

12:30 PM – Lunch. This month it was usually either soup or P&J sandwiches. That’s not a typo. Actual peanut butter is hard to find and expensive in Mexico.

1:30 PM – The sun has reached a point in the sky where laptop screens are visible outside in the hammock. So, yeah, hammock time for the rest of the work day.

3:00 PMSan Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, MexicoHead to SEDEM, a large (and free!) athletic and parks facility ten minutes away, where we ran on the track. The later we went, the more likely we were to be forced to compare ourselves to blazing fast 15 year-olds who can run for days.

4:15 PM – Back home. Every third or fourth day it would be time to start making the soup that would be our upcoming lunches and dinners.

4:30 PM – Back in the hammock or at the table outside to wrap up the work day.

6:00 PM – Dinner time. Usually the aforementioned soup and an avocado per person. Some nights included Crackets.

6:30 PM to 10:00 PM – Choose one or more of the following: writing blogs, reading, getting extra work done, personal development (see above), walking to Parque Central, grabbing a drink/people watching on Real de Guadalupe.

10:00 PM – Arrested Development. In anticipation of next month we have re-watched all three seasons.
